Long Distance Wedding PlanningMay 24th, 2013

by Spoon

It is HARD. There are people who say, “Long distance relationships do not work.” I am here to tell you, that is false. What they should say is, “Long distance relationships are HARD and take WORK.” Throw in planning a wedding and you’ve got yourself a hot mess.

The fiancé and I are trying to balance a lot of things right now and it’s starting to take an effect on us. Wedding planning is just more stress stacked on stress. Emily is working so much that there is not enough time in the day for her to look at places as potential wedding venues. I’m here in San Antonio, so I’m limited in my availability to help. One thing I’ve tried to do, with the help of the amazing ladies at the Wedding Guide, is talk her through some of this planning. To be honest, I had zero knowledge of anything about weddings other than cake and booze and a DJ.

We’re taking it slow but it’s coming together. Maybe the Bridal Extravaganza will help us. I’m actually excited about seeing what all will be happening at the show. Never been to one. I hear that there are over 200 exhibitors to see. I can’t even imagine that.

Groom Tip #1: Don’t be a dude. Guys can get away with talking to each other with one word. Your bride doesn’t want, “Yea, that looks cool.” Say something about the cake. Do you prefer chocolate of vanilla? Say that. That’s all your bride wants…input. Not, “Looks like a cake.” (Direct line from my mouth. Oops.)

Henrietta Gets Lipo TreatmentMay 22nd, 2013

by Henrietta Hernandez

Hello my friends, my fellow brides-to-be and ladies who are looking for lipo laser to get in that dress. Every woman thinks about their weight and appearance, especially when you are trying to get into your wedding dress. I have often glared in the mirror and thought, oh my!

So what is a girl’s best kept secret? A plastic surgeon! I have heard great things about Dr. Jenenby’s Plastic and Cosmetic Center they have this machine called The Viora. It is a lipolaser used to treat cellulite, skin impairments, contouring, and tightening of the skin. But is it a bride’s answer to great skin? We are taking a trip to Spa Black for some answers.

And there’s a reason why I have all these questions. Several things keep swirling in my mind. It’s approaching summer, and what does summer mean?  Swimwear. YIKES! Cellulite! What’s a girl to do when you’re beach bound with your fiance’s friends? Plus, the pressure is on to find THE dress and look amazing in it. Luckily, I have narrowed it down and have some final picks. But all the dresses I’m still considering still require some fine tuning of my skin and body.

So here we go, first stop, visit my friend Patricia at Dr. Jeneby’s office. Now, I am not affraid to admit that I have had some work done. It was back in the 90′s the first time I had work done. I was with Drex on the KTFM Morning Show. It was on the air, and I was having lipo surgery from the famous boob doctor, Dr. Young. Now just for the record my boobs are real.  I did however, do my thighs and saddle bags. I was happy with my results. Now, 15 years later and over the age of 45, my skin’s intregrity was very loose and I have areas of cellulite.

My girl Patricia, whom I have know for years said, “Girlfriend, it’s time freshen you up before you walk down that aisle!” Mel and Patty are very informative on products for skin care. So I picked up some great moisturizers and skin lighting creams for my hormonal face and started working on my body.

My first cellulite treatment is now over and done with. All I can say is the Viora is amazing! It is a radio frequency high performance laser that penetrates the layers of your skin to smooth and eliminate cellulite. It works like a suction, while massaging the skin. You do feel a little heat while they are working on that area. I worked the sides of both my thighs, which were a little sensitive, but mostly painless.

The Viora

Getting smooth

Post-procedure, I can tell you that after the first treatment, I felt like I had just worked out. I even had energy. My skin looked radiant. I did have to drink plenty of water to enhance the effects of the thermogenic proceess. But I’m not done yet. There are several treatments involved so I will keep you posted.  Facebook me for more info or go to beautybyjeneby.com.

So how do we go from cellulite to wedding cake?  Like this. Check this cake out!

Don’t steal my cake idea! Isn’t it beautiful? Lord help me! Cake tasting…with the beau! See you next week, oh and at the The Bridal Extravaganza in June!  Be ready ladies and gents.

Catering: New Wedding Trends Make for an Interactive ExperienceMay 21st, 2013

At a recent wedding professional’s meeting with NACE, we were introduced to a new trend in wedding catering. The new trend had less to do with a new type of food than about how the food was presented.

What struck us as cool and innovative was the way all the food engaged the guests. The food stations were set up to illicit guest interaction. A step beyond a buffet station, all the of various elements were placed out and the guests were allowed to create their own versions of salads, chilis, gyros and desserts.

We really like the idea that everyone can personalize their own meal and add or subtract ingredients that makes their meal unique. By doing this, we can see that each guest would have a better food experience at a catered event. I mean, who doesn’t like the Burger King option of “having it your way?” There is a reason why Whataburger boasts that there are 36,864 ways to customize your order. The goal, is to make the diner have input in their perfect meal. We definitely approve of this and can see why this will be a popular trend in wedding catering over the next year.

With the help of Bokeh Photography, we were able to get you some fantatic photos to illustrate this new food/catering trend.

Wedding Caterer Brings Healthy Food to Westside San AntonioMay 20th, 2013

Last week was the grand opening of Cruzan’s. Located at 1508 Guadalupe Street, this has been a long awaited moment for Chef Cruzan who has built his career and business on the concept of creating truly healthy meals. Cruzan’s offers a variety of healthy dine-in options ranging from gourmet sandwiches to classics such as a NY Strip. A variety of freshly made meals will also be available for pick up. Cruzan’s also features live cooking demonstrations hosted by their executive chef during restaurant hours on select days.

For Chef Cruzan, healthy eating is a lifestyle commitment. “Eating should be just as much about what you are putting into your body as it is what you are not. It’s easy to get preoccupied with a calorie count, but there is a real danger to limiting your calories without regard to the nutritional content of your diet. Making sure to include the vitamins and minerals your body craves can actually help you meet weight goals and also improves your energy levels, cognitive abilities, and overall mood,” says Chef Cruzan when asked about his viewpoint on “dieting.”

Shortly after opening his catering and personal chef business, Chef Keith Cruzan relocated to the heart of the cultural arts district with a mission to bring a new hope to West Side San Antonians looking for local healthy options. He began offering cooking classes to the public, as well as local non-profits, in order to educate local residents on nutritional content. “Hopefully, this restaurant will be a way for me to give back to a community that has supported me and my business from the very beginning.”

So make sure you stop by Cruzan’s and taste their healthy menu. As a wedding caterer, we have heard nothing but good things and we’re glad they are expanding their ventures to reach a larger client base.

Does Wedding Planning Have GPS?May 17th, 2013

spoon-webby Spoon

Have you ever known that you had to do something, but didn’t know what? Lost. Just lost. That’s what I am. I know there is A LOT of things that need to be discussed for the wedding, but what are they?

With my fiancé living in another state, it makes planning a little hard. Since we’ve decided to have our wedding in her hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, it’s not like I can go look at venues, cake, flowers, or anything. Ah ha! I have a solution.

Skype. Facetime. Tango. I decided I was going to contribute by using technology. Specifically, I was going to use amazing video chatting apps! I will be able to see what she is talking about and we can make those choices together!

Personally…I am a guy who would really love it if I just showed up and it was done. Pastel colors, flowers, napkin designs, what paper to use on the invitations, these things do not speak to me as a great time. If it were my choice only, I would ask our closest friends that would be at the wedding to a post-wedding BBQ and we’d all stroll down memory lane. But that’s the problem though…I can’t do that. I can’t just think about what I want anymore. All of these details are so important to my fiancé, that it’s now THAT important to me.

So yes…I have been looking online at wedding setups and venues. I have been trying to figure out some things so that my fiancé isn’t alone in planning the biggest day in our lives. And I’m not just doing it to make my fiancé happy…I’m doing it because I want that day to be epic for everyone, as well as for me and Emily to remember for the rest of our many years to come.

I don’t know what’s next, but I am excited to see it come together. And, if any of you have any recommedations for wedding planning remotely, please let me know. I am always willing to hear about cool technologies that can help during this crazy time.

The Stresses of Dress ShoppingMay 15th, 2013

by Henrietta Hernandez

Hello Ladies and Gents!

Where do I begin this week?  The stress of choosing things is almost as exhausting as coordinating and planing the wedding. We are down to the dress. Let me just say that online shopping has been my savior! Checking out all the dresses from your bed at night with a glass of wine is nice. I find that mapping out the places you are going to check out and try on dresses is a lot easier when comes down to budgeting for your wedding dress. After all, I am no Kim Kardashian with a million dollars budgeted for my wedding.

The Wedding Guide has some great tips on style and body shapes for different dresses. Yes, if you have boobs, butt and hips it is going to take you a little longer to find the dress. I am trying to hold out for the Bridal Extravaganza in June. I hope I will find good deals and ideas for everything I want.

Recently, I just found out one of my girlfriends is getting married the weekend before my wedding in October. Gosh, there is always that someone that deflates your balloon of hype. Lol, I kid. Roxy has really been through hell with men. I am truly glad she found a good man. We hang out and I have seen that he is the most patient man and he treats her like a princess. She also has twin children who are eight years old. Yes, this man has patience! Roxy and I have shared our war stories. I will miss our talks and her sizing up all my boy toys.

I am so worried about weight gain and buying a dress. They say you wear two to three sizes above your regular size. Roxy spent $1,600  for her dress. I want to stay at about $1,200…that is my limit.

So here we go, on to my first bridal shop. I was anxious to see what dress size I would be. I brought my mom, my son and my maid of honor Sylvia Rincon. It is important to me that my mom and my family are involved as much as possible. I mean, my mom has been waiting for 45 years to be apart of my wedding. Let me just say, being over 40, and marriage, well it’s no walk in the park. I suffer from hot flashes at this point in my life, and trying on a dress in a hot dressing room and a heavy one that is two sizes too small was not comfortable at all. The sales rep was not as pleasant or informative about dresses as I would have liked, which was a complete turnoff.  At this point all I wanted to do was join a fat farm and have a salad!

Ok, I will admit, I am being a bit over dramamtic. So after leaving the shop I decided to consult with my girl Patty Zarate. Patty is one my friends from my radio days. She knows my vanity and the extreme importance it is to me to look good for that big day. She works at Spa Black and she inspired me to do a make over. Yes those thighs and butt need some attention.  So this week me and my bridesmaids will be doing a boot camp. Oh, and a little cheating with some lipo laser. I will set the appointment and I will let you ladies know how it works, and  the results.  Dr Jeneby’s office will never be the same. And so dear friends, I am still on the hunt for a dress!

Get Gatsby GlamMay 14th, 2013

Today’s blog comes from our friends at Silpada jewelry.

Do your upcoming weekend plans include a date night with Leonardo DiCaprio (swoon!) and the highly anticipated movie The Great Gatsby? Ours sure do! If so, don’t be afraid to “jazz” up your look to celebrate this timeless novel! What’s trending right now is something that was popular almost a hundred years ago now (wow), but is still as classic a look as ever.

We wholeheartedly agree with the words of the great Jay Gatsby, “Can’t repeat the past…why of course you can!’’ At Silpada we take his advice to heart, literally, by bringing back the glitz and glam of the roaring 20s in many of our sterling silver jewelry designs. This includes fringe, frocks and festive gems which have become a major style moment! How can you incorporate “Gatsby glam” into your wardrobe? We’re so glad you asked…

Channel your inner Daisy Buchanan and Jordan Baker with these ideas to achieve rip-roaring style.

  • Get posh in pearls by layering on this classic jazz-age staple.
  • Nothing screams the 20s more than chic Art Deco-inspired jewels.
  • Accessorize with fringe to add fanciful flair to your ensemble.

Don’t forget, this gorgeous style of jewelry is also great for those brides that are trying to theme their weddings around this 20s style. So, tell us how you plan to incorporate “Gatsby glam” into your everyday or bridal style! We’d love to hear and see what your plans include.

Gowns Galore!May 13th, 2013

Did you find your gown this weekend at the Brides Against Breast Cancer event? Some amazing wedding professionals all got to together to make this year’s event a huge success. Helping out with this year’s event was our very own Signature Photography Inc., Reel Photo Booth, It Works! Global and Earth’s Angels White Dove Release. Also helping volunteer that day were our friends from cHAIRish the Day.

Brides were treated to an array of gorgeous gowns deeply discounted and ready for the taking. In addition, planning brides could get some great information from wedding professionals about their products and services. The two-day event was for such a worth while cause, and the Wedding Guide was happy to be involved once again this year. Mark your calendars for this same time next year for your opportunity to get involved with this great organization.

Spoon: I Did ItMay 10th, 2013

by Spoon

So I did it…I asked the girl that I love to marry me. Honestly, I didn’t know that I would actually find a person that would actually WANT to spend the rest of their life we me. But alas, there is that one special woman that loves me enough to say yes.

Emily and I met at the radio station in Tulsa. She was a new intern for the morning show and I was the night guy/webmaster. The morning show was doing a big event for Thanksgiving and I came in early to take photos. I chatted with her about being an intern and noticed just how freakin’ cute she was.

Fast forward 3 months and I reached out to her about something that happened on the morning show that had her upset. I left it in her court saying, “If you ever want to grab a beer and chat, let me know.”

My birthday was coming up and she asked if I was going out for my birthday. Alas, I really didn’t have plans because I got off work at midnight and all my friends had real 9-5 jobs. She insisted that I meet her for a drink. That drink turned into a couple while we played Silver Strike (a bowling video game), and the rest…is history. That bar would later become the place I proposed to her.

So now I am here, at the point in my life where I’m “helping” to plan a wedding. Everything I’ve ever heard about planning a wedding was all bad. Stress. Fights. Cakes.  Colors. Flowers. Foul-ups. So being honest, I was a little scared. Emily, my fiancé, isn’t like most girls, so I wouldn’t have to worry… right? WRONG. She turned into a normal bride-to-be. I still love her so much.

In the process of getting our wedding planning off the ground, I was asked to write down everyone I could think of that would come to our wedding. I guess I didn’t actually listen because I wrote down everyone I wanted to come to the wedding. BIG difference.

Here’s the deal. I’m not friendly with a lot of my family. I DON’T want some to come. So my list came to nine, yes nine people in total. My four groomsmen, my really close friends, my grandmother, and an aunt and her family. That’s it. They were the only ones on my list. Apparently, that wasn’t enough…palm to face.

Why would I ask people, who I don’t want to be there, to come my wedding? For the gifts? I would rather purchase these things myself. I figured my fiancé would be happy that she could invite more people she knows. So what’s the solution to this first issue? I guess…I will invite more people.

Say “I DO” to Brides Against Breast CancerMay 9th, 2013

In the midst of getting all your wedding planning done, it’s always nice to know that you can also help others in the process of knocking off items on your list. Such is the case with the Brides Against Breast Cancer organization. Brides Against Breast Cancer™  www.bridesabc.org  is an organization serving  a very “pink” purpose – their gown sales fund programs and services that are free to cancer patients and their families.

Through its “Original Nationwide Tour of Gowns” bridal shows, Brides Against Breast Cancer plans to unveil more than 100 shows in 2013.  In cities nationwide, with an average offering of nearly 1,000 new or gently worn bridal dresses, brides-to-be will find their dream gown at a greatly reduced cost.  BABC sells new and gently used designer gowns, including all designer brands imaginable.   We also have the perfect bridal accessories — including tiaras, veils and shoes, all available for purchase.

“Wedding gown sales are an important fundraising program for Brides Against Breast Cancer.  Our organization makes it possible for future brides around the country to purchase wedding gowns at dramatic savings, and give back,” said Amy Paulishak, VP Business Development, Brides Against Breast Cancer.   “Most gown prices range from $75 to $799, including beautiful new name brand and designer gowns valued up to $3,000. We also offer layaway.”

Another benefit of attending the event is the opportunity to meet with local wedding vendors. Brides Against Breast Cancer brings in preferred local vendors to exhibit, and many will have exciting giveaways for you and your friends.

Here’s how you can help:

  • If you’d like to help Brides Against Breast Cancer fulfill their mission, there are several ways to get involved. They are accepting donations of contemporary gown styles, slips and veils dating from 2009 to current.
  • In addition, they are looking for volunteers for their Long Island event as well as other events on their nationwide tour. As a volunteer you’ll help brides-to-be Say YES to the perfect dress for their special day.
  • Tell your friends, family and soon-to-be brides about the Upcoming Event in your city.
  • Follow us on Facebook and Twitter at https://twitter.com/BABCTour and https://www.facebook.com/BABCTour
